Navigating certain medical conditions can feel uncomfortable, especially when they involve sexual health. Erectile dysfunction is one such condition, and it is more common in Singapore than many realise, affecting around half of men aged 30 and above. As a result, many men try to manage symptoms quietly on their own before deciding to seek professional advice. Over time, ongoing difficulties can start to affect day-to-day life, which is why some men explore longer-term solutions. When medications or other non-invasive treatments are no longer helpful, penile implants may be considered as an option to support erectile function.
Penile implants are medical devices placed inside the penis to create or maintain rigidity through a mechanical mechanism. The implant is positioned entirely within the body and, once in place, allows the penis to become firm enough for penetrative sexual activity.
Penile implants do not affect sensation, ejaculation, or sexual desire, which depend on nerve function and underlying health conditions. They also do not treat the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction, but instead provide a reliable mechanical solution for achieving rigidity.
Penile implants generally fall into two main categories. The choice depends on individual preference, anatomy, health status, and clinical assessment.
These consist of bendable rods placed inside the penis. The rods allow the penis to be positioned manually when needed. Malleable implants have a straightforward design and are adjusted by hand.
Inflatable implants involve cylinders within the penis, a fluid reservoir and a pump typically placed in the scrotum. When activated, fluid moves into the cylinders to create firmness. The device can be deflated after use.
Determining whether a penile implant is the right option involves a structured evaluation to ensure the approach aligns with both medical needs and personal expectations. This assessment typically includes:
Penile implant surgery is performed in a controlled surgical setting using general or regional anaesthesia, depending on individual clinical needs. While the techniques vary slightly, the procedure generally involves making a small incision in the penis or scrotum to create space within the erectile chambers, placing the implant components in and then closing the incision with sutures. The duration of the surgery differs between individuals, depending on anatomy and the type of implant used.
Penile implant surgery, like any surgical procedure, can involve side effects that vary depending on the individual and the type of implant used. Most men experience some short-term discomfort, swelling or bruising around the incision site, which typically improves as healing progresses with appropriate post-operative care.
Less commonly, complications such as infection, ongoing pain, difficulty operating the device, or mechanical issues with inflatable implants may occur and could require further treatment. However, penile implants do not usually affect sexual sensation, ejaculation, or sexual desire, as these functions depend on nerve activity, hormonal balance, and overall health rather than the implant itself.
As with any surgery, it is important to monitor recovery and seek medical attention if you notice increasing pain, fever, redness, unusual discharge, or problems using the implant, as these may indicate a complication that requires review.
Penile implants are usually considered when other erectile dysfunction treatments are ineffective, unsuitable, or not preferred. They may be considered in situations such as:

While seeking professional help for erectile dysfunction may be embarrassing for some men, penile implants can be a viable solution. It is still worth noting, however, that different factors are taken into consideration when assessing suitability for the procedure. Our specialist would be able to assess and advise on a case-by-case basis for each patient.
